A stone labyrinth laid out on the grass on Aegna island

Aegna Island

Naissaar’s small neighbour, part of the city of Tallinn

Aegna lies on the eastern side of Tallinn Bay, just off the tip of the Viimsi peninsula, and mirrors Naissaar on the west. At about three square kilometres it is much smaller, and it is officially part of the city of Tallinn — a city district with pine forest, sandy coves and next to no cars.

Like its bigger neighbour, Aegna was fortified for Peter the Great’s Naval Fortress and then spent decades in military hands. What visitors come for now are the beaches, the easy forest paths, the big boulders and the quiet.

Top things to do: Aegna Island

Walk around the island

Marked trails loop through the forest and along the shore; you can see most of Aegna in three or four unhurried hours.

Find the stone labyrinth

A labyrinth of stones laid out on the grass is one of the island’s curiosities and a favourite with children.

Swim and picnic

Aegna’s sandy beaches are sheltered and shallow. As on Naissaar, bring your own food and take your rubbish away.

Take a self-guided or private boat tour

GetYourGuide lists a phone-based self-guided tour of Aegna and a private seal-watching trip that lands on the island.

How to get to Aegna Island

  • By scheduled boat: a small passenger boat runs from Tallinn to Aegna in the summer season. Departure points and timetables change, so check the current season’s information from the city of Tallinn or the operator.
  • Crossing time: usually under an hour.
  • Naissaar and Aegna in one trip? There is no regular boat between the two islands; treat them as separate days.

Insider tips

  • Aegna is the easier option when you have only half a day or when Naissaar boats are full.
  • There are simple camping sites on the island; follow the rules posted at the harbour.
  • Ticks are present here too — use repellent and check yourself afterwards.

Naissaar has no shops and the boat runs only in season. Pair your island day with guided trips from Tallinn — a Prangli island tour, a sunset sail or a Soviet-history walk — and book the rest of your stay in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Aegna or Naissaar — which should I choose?

Naissaar is bigger and has far more to see: batteries, the mine depot, the railway, a village and a lighthouse. Aegna is small, simple and relaxing. With one day and an interest in history, choose Naissaar; for a quick beach-and-forest escape, Aegna.

Does anyone live on Aegna?

Only a handful of people. It is a city district of Tallinn in name, but in practice a nature island.

Are there shops on Aegna?

No. Bring food and water.
